Jeune professeur de tennis issu d'un milieu modeste, Chris Wilton se fait embaucher dans un club huppé des beaux quartiers de Londres. Il ne tarde pas à sympathiser avec Tom Hewett, un jeune homme de la haute société avec qui il partage sa passion pour l'opéra. Très vite, Chris fréquente régulièrement les Hewett et séduit Chloe, la sœur de Tom. Alors qu'il s'apprête à l'épouser et qu'il voit sa situation sociale se métamorphoser, il fait la connaissance de la ravissante fiancée de Tom, Nola Rice, une jeune Américaine venue tenter sa chance comme comédienne en Angleterre...
Tout les sépare, y compris quelques millions d’années lumière et Zerph n'aurait jamais du rencontrer Agathe, ni poser son vaisseau spatial en Auvergne s'il n'avait pas été pris en chasse par Xab et Yeb, les fils naturels de Robocop et de Terminator, deux androïdes originaires de Praton. Justement Agathe rêve toujours du prince charmant, amoureux, courtois raffiné. Zerph vient d'une planète où les femmes ont pris le pouvoir depuis dix mille ans et rêve d'un monde ou il s'affranchirait de l'oppression féminine.
Des jeunes gens originaires de différents pays, ethnies ou environnements sociaux, sont forcés de se côtoyer lorsqu'ils intègrent l'Université de Colombus, où le professeur indien Maurice Phipps (Laurence Fishburne) enseigne les sciences politiques. Les étudiants devront faire face à de nombreux problèmes tels que les difficultés financières, leur propre sécurité, du harcèlement sexuel, des doutes personnels, et les questions qu'ils se posent à propos de leur avenir, leur sexualité, et last but not least, le racisme. Évoluant dans l'angoisse de l'échec, et poussés à la réussite en classe, en sport ou dans leurs relations sociales, ils voient leurs nerfs encore plus ébranlés par leur manque d'expérience, l'orgueil, leur incompréhension du monde autour d'eux et leur besoin d'y trouver leur place.
