Oscar et Felix ont passé la quarantaine mais vivent pourtant en colocation. Il sont divorcés depuis peu de temps et ne s'en sont pas encore vraiment remis. En attendant de trouver les nouvelles femmes de leurs vies, ils se chamaillent à longueur de journée tant ils sont différents. Comme un vrai petit couple !
Dans l'Inde du XVIe siècle. Maya et Tara ont grandi côte à côte. Dès l'enfance, la première a été au service de son amie, petite princesse promise à un grand destin. Pourtant, Tara a toujours été jalouse de la roturière, plus douée qu'elle, notamment pour la danse, et n'a jamais manqué une occasion d'humilier Maya. Quand un mariage est organisé entre Raj Singh et la princesse, Maya se glisse subrepticement dans la chambre nuptiale, se vengeant ainsi des multiples vexations qu'elle a subies. Chassée du palais, la jeune servante rencontre Jai Kumar, un sculpteur dont elle devient la muse, et suit l'enseignement de Rasa Devi, qui lui enseigne l'art du Kama Sûtra...
À 12 ans, Paï est la petite fille du chef Koro. Celui-ci doit trouver le garçon qui sera digne de devenir son successeur. Paï se sent dotée des qualités particulières pour devenir chef Maori mais son grand-père, parce qu'elle est une fille, refuse de l'initier. Elle devra alors apprendre en cachette les rituels traditionnels afin de lui montrer qu'elle est à la hauteur du légendaire « Whale Rider », le cavalier des mers.
Ruthie et Or, une mère et sa fille de 17 ans, vivent dans un petit appartement à Tel-Aviv. Ruthie se prostitue depuis une vingtaine d'années. Or a déjà essayé plusieurs fois et sans succès de lui faire quitter la rue. Le quotidien de Or est une succession sans fin de petits boulots : faire la plonge dans un restaurant, laver des cages d'escaliers, récupérer des bouteilles consignées, tout en allant au lycée quand elle le peut. L'état de santé de Ruthie devient critique. Alors que sa mère sort d'un énième séjour à l'hôpital, Or décide que les choses doivent changer.
Le jeune John Lyshitski (Dax Shepard) est un pur produit du système pénitentiaire américain. Il a passé la moitié de sa vie derrière les barreaux et en connaît le fonctionnement par cœur. Après sa quatrième sortie, il décide de se venger du juge responsable de ses malheurs, mais apprend que celui-ci vient juste de mourir. Dépité, John découvre que le magistrat avait un fils et décide de déplacer l’objet de sa vengeance vers lui, en ourdissant un complot qui envoie sa progéniture en prison. Mais pour être bien certain que le fils de son ennemi va souffrir de la même façon que lui a souffert durant la moitié de sa vie, il décide de commettre un crime afin de l’accompagner derrière les barreaux.
